Neuropsychological testing has developed over many years to now allow us to sometimes accurately differentiate between and to determine the cause of a range of cognitive or mental impairments. Neuroscientists and Neuropsychologists can draw inferences from scores on a range of tests to pinpoint existence and severity of impairment, the part of the brain that is affected, the behavioural consequences, the course of the disease and the sort of treatments that might be useful.
Touch screen computior testing allows us to quickly check a range of cognitive abilities, before fatigue becomes a major factor, and to compare your results with those of thousands of people of the same age, education level and gender. We can then provide some idea if any changes are normal for you age, or, if they are not, to determine the part of the brain that is effected, the cause, the behavioural consequences and possible environmental factors.
In addition we need to test for psychological problems to try to understand if these are factors in making the symptoms of dementia worse or if they are a consequence of degenerative disease. Psychological tests have been developed to make it easier for older people to complete these accurately.
Of equal importance it is important to get a very good idea about what is happening in your life. We need to learn about your lifestyle choices and habits, we need to learn about your history and if other family members have suffered from various illnesses as sometime these are genetically linked and we need to learn about your present relationships and what stresses there are in your life. All these can be risks factors and are also essential in making some sense of what is happening and whether you are suffering from some form of dementia or not.
